There are 9 cities had submitted bids to host the 2012 Summer Olympics, including Havana, Istanbul, Leipzig, London, Madrid, Moscow, New York, Paris and Rio de Janeiro. As a result of a scored technical evaluation, the International Olympic Committee reduced the number of cities to 5, London, Madrid Moscow, New York and Paris.
On July 2005, the London won the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games over the front-running Paris. Paris had lost twice previouly in the past 20 years. The British gold medal middle-distance runner Sebastian Coe re-energized the London bid, defeating Paris by 54 votes 50 votes at the IOC meeting in Singapore.
